The only difference is for certain plays such as Sac flies, or walks. A walk isn’t a hit, but it shouldn’t count against your batting average either, because you did get to base. So it is an appearance, but not an ‘at bat’.
Your OB% is based on your hits and walks / your number of appearances
Your AVG is based on your hits / your at bats.
